The only reason I went to Malaysia was to see if I would like working there. A few people had told me that it was a great place to launch a career and a few days after Christmas my favourite travel buddy and I (my lovely mum) went off to Kuala Lumpur to see what this nation in Asia had to offer. The first thing we weren’t prepared for was the humidity! Wow! This really made it near impossible for us to explore anything outside during the day.
Seeing that we were limited to inside activities during the day, we ended up doing what Malaysia is famous for… shopping! The place to go for any shopping enthusiast is Bukit Bintang which has all the malls and shops you could ever think of, housing the world’s finest luxury brands. It was one of those places that you could spend the entire day and without a doubt, all your money. It was especially magical because it was just after Christmas and the decorations were beautiful, offering a truly festive but humid holiday season.
Malaysia has another side away from Bukit Bintang, the Central Market which comes highly recommended by any Malaysian. It has local handmade clothes, art, craft, paintings and a range of delicious food choices. Stepping into this market allowed me to see and truly appreciate the myriad of cultures that make up Malaysia and to see the country through a different lens. This was one of the highlights of the trip and mum even had a chance to have her first and probably last fish spa:)
Malaysia was also one of those places were I wasn’t sure what to do or what to see simply because the reason for my trip wasn’t tourism. However, on our first night we decided to go and see Petronas Towers up close. I couldn’t understand what the hype was all about and the hotel concierge assured me that this was something we didn’t want to miss, so off we went and on first glance, I realised why. These beautiful twin towers were mesmerizing, we gathered at the foot of these magnificent towers along with a few other tourists and we were all blown away. The idea was to go up the towers to the one level to get a view of the city but just looking up at them was more than enough to appreciate their sheer beauty.
If anyone was to ask my opinion of Malaysia, is it worth visiting? I truly am on the fence with this one. I didn’t really get a chance to venture out of Kuala Lumpur but we enjoyed our time there. I will certainly welcome any thoughts about anyone else’s experience:)
