Sometimes you hear the name of a place and you form an impression about it in your mind. That is exactly what happened to me when I heard the name Frankfurt, I thought it would be this little quaint city in Germany with beautiful views. Maybe some parts of it are like that, like the attempt to recreate the romantic Love Lock Bridge (Pont des Arts), but downtown Frankfurt is a busy financial district and certainly not the picturesque tourist destination I had imagined. Had I done a little more research I would have realized that Frankfurt is the financial hub of Germany and home to the European Central Bank, the gigantic Euro symbol was a dead giveaway.
Despite my initial disappointment, I soon discovered the more touristy and historical sites in Frankfurt. The Romer, a medieval building in the Alstadt is probably one of the most notable places and is still the city hall. The square is a lovely place to spend the afternoon and enjoy delicious currywurst washed down with a Radler. For a more historical experience, the other must see is The Goethe House which is a writer’s house museum and the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a treat for a History nerd like me.
I doubt I will go back to Frankfurt but I am grateful I got a chance to discover it for myself.
